Safe Life From The Thunderstorms With Plants 7th Quarterly Progress Report

Bangladesh is an agriculture-based country with extensive farmlands and rural communities. In many agricultural areas, large shade trees are generally avoided to protect crop productivity and maintain the usability of cultivated land. As a result, open agricultural fields, grazing areas, and rural landscapes can remain highly exposed to lightning strikes during sudden thunderstorms and seasonal rainfall.

Lightning is a serious natural hazard in Bangladesh, particularly for farmers and rural residents who often work or travel in open areas during thunderstorms. Each year, lightning incidents cause significant loss of life and affect vulnerable rural communities.

To contribute to community safety and disaster resilience, Global Community Organization (GCO) has initiated the project “Safe Life From The Thunderstorms With Plants.” The initiative promotes an environmentally sustainable approach by encouraging the plantation of tall and slender trees, including palm, betel nut, and palmyra trees, in suitable locations around agricultural and rural areas.

These trees can grow vertically and occupy comparatively limited horizontal space. When strategically planted in appropriate locations, they may provide a natural elevated point in the landscape while allowing agricultural activities to continue around them. The project therefore seeks to combine environmental sustainability, rural safety, climate resilience, and community participation.

Pilot Demonstration in Bagha, Rajshahi

As part of the pilot phase, 25 palm trees have been planted in Khanpur, Gorgori, Bagha, Rajshahi. The pilot plantation serves as a practical demonstration of how carefully selected and strategically positioned trees can be incorporated into agricultural landscapes while maintaining land usability.

The pilot also provides an opportunity for local communities to observe, participate in, and learn about the project's broader approach to environmental protection and disaster-risk reduction.

Project Implementation Areas

The project is being implemented mainly in:

Lalpur Upazila, Natore District Bagha Upazila, Rajshahi District

Through community engagement and plantation activities, GCO is working to increase awareness of lightning-related risks and encourage rural communities to participate in locally appropriate environmental solutions.

The initiative emphasizes community ownership and long-term care of planted trees. Local participation is particularly important because the effectiveness and sustainability of plantation-based interventions depend on proper site selection, tree survival, maintenance, and continued community awareness.
