About the Initiative

A Meal Is More Than Food

The One Dollar One Meal initiative by Global Community Organization directly confronts the silent crisis of hunger among Bangladesh's elderly population. Driven by poverty, social isolation, and the breakdown of family support systems, millions of elderly citizens go to bed hungry every night.

We believe that no senior citizen should face hunger. For just one dollar, GCO volunteers deliver a fresh, nutritious meal — along with a moment of human connection — to an elderly person who needs it most. It is a simple act with a profound impact.

The Problem

Challenges Faced by the Elderly in Bangladesh

Economic Vulnerability

Many elderly individuals lack sufficient financial resources after retirement, relying on small pensions or family support. The absence of a robust social safety net leaves them particularly vulnerable to food insecurity.

Inaccessibility to Nutritious Food

Physical limitations, low income, and geographical isolation restrict the elderly's access to nutritious food. Malnutrition is prevalent among older adults, leading to a cascade of serious health issues.

Social Isolation

Many elderly people live alone, particularly in rural areas. This lack of social support networks worsens their vulnerability to hunger and compounds their sense of abandonment.

Disruption of Family Support

As younger generations migrate to cities for work or education, elderly parents are left behind without the daily support they need — making hunger a silent crisis within families.

Our Response

What GCO Is Doing

Community Food Distribution

We establish community-based food programs distributing nutritious packages — locally grown vegetables, legumes, and fortified foods — tailored to the dietary needs of elderly recipients.

Nutrition Education

GCO conducts workshops and campaigns educating elderly individuals and their families about balanced diets, disease-specific nutrition, and the importance of regular meals for healthy aging.

Home Garden Support

As part of our Abalamban initiative, we support families in growing home-based fruit and vegetable gardens, ensuring a sustainable supply of fresh, nutritious food for elderly members.

Community Kitchen Centers

We set up community kitchens where elderly people receive both nutritious meals and emotional support — focal points that address food insecurity, social isolation, and overall well-being together.

Economic Empowerment

Microcredit programs and skills training help elderly individuals earn supplemental income, reducing dependence on external food relief over time.

Community Advocacy

We partner with local leaders, religious groups, and youth organizations to raise awareness and advocate for stronger national elderly welfare policies.

GCO pushes for universal pension coverage and integration of elderly citizens into existing social welfare programs to ensure no one is left behind.
